Its been taking a while but…
Downtown Waycross was once the thriving center of Waycross until about 100 years ago. Since then Waycross has developed to the southeast of downtown. This is mainly due to the availability of land for larger business constructions such as Lowes, Walmart, Kroger, Robbie Robertson Ford and of course our Waycross Mall.
Over these years downtown Waycross went into decline, however, in the last 15 years or so, things have been changing.
The Downtown Waycross Development Authority has been slowly but surely making changes to bring downtown back as a thriving business area again.
- This started with a $7.4M renovation to the original Phoenix Hotel in 2001 transforming it into an office complex.
- Then the Ware Hotel in 2012 was renovated and reopened as apartment homes
- In 2019, the original 5-story Bunn building started its renovation.
There are also plans for the old Lyric Theatre and the downtown old Post Office
